This two year project seeks to identify undiagnosed HIV infection in Latino/Hispanic communities. The Stroger Adolescent Medicine Trials Unit (AMTU) site plans to extend their existing collaboration with two prominent Latino HIV/AIDS focused community-based programs, Project VIDA and Vida/SIDA to accomplish the scopes of this project. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for working with staff from these agencies in the recruitment of 13-24 year old Latino/Latinas for participation. Testing for HIV will be conducted in both alternative venue settings (places where youth congregate who may be at risk for HIV) and through social and sexual networks.
- Implements all study activities as dictated by the protocol including reporting of cases to the AMTU, maintain proactive communication with local health department and non-health department testing sites to ensure reporting steps are followed (e.g., bi-weekly check-in)
- Assists in contacting subjects to discuss study, to coordinate study participation, conduct study visits and to obtain consent.
- Attend case review meetings and represent the AMTU site at meetings.
- As assigned by the Project Director, works with study staff to develop and implement recruitment strategies for research subjects in collaboration with community partners, the clinical programs operated by the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, and other youth-serving agencies.
- Performs data collection with subjects at venues, including HIV rapid tests.
- Works closely with community partner agency staff to ensure testing goals are met, that fidelity to the protocol are being maintained, and that all required documentation is accurate and transmitted within the time frames dictated by the protocol. Other expectations as applicable to the local site needs and/or to procedures established in the protocol manual of operations
- Contacts programs’ providing service to youth in the community areas targeted by this project and maintains a current database of these programs for participant referrals.
- Complete all documentation requirements and provide quality control of all data entry.
- Attend all local team meetings and retreats, including the Connect-to-Protect working group meetings.
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities.
- Assist in the preparation of documents required by the AMTU site institutional review board, including preparation of annual progress reports.
- Provides linkage for preliminary HIV positive youth to the ATN 093 outreach worker who will coordinate linkage to medical care services
- Performs other functions assigned by the Principal Investigator and Project Director.
- Bi-lingual - verbal, reading, and writing (Spanish and English)
- Bachelors degree in health, social science, or related field and minimum of 2 years experience (preferably with target population and/or community-based organization)
- Current certification to provide HIV counseling and testing including rapid HIV testing
- Demonstrated experience providing HIV counseling and testing
- Must be willing to attend a protocol training session slated to occur in late summer, early fall of 2010 in Washington, DC.
