Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager, HIV Access Services, the Patient Access Clerk will be a resource for patient flow activities involving central appointments, registration, insurance verification and reception.  This individual will be capable of floating throughout the various assigned departments, to assist in patient flow activities. This individual will provide compassionate customer service with dignity and respect.

 Specific Responsibilities:


  • Maintain a daily list of scheduled patients and manages patient flow for the registration process
  • Assists patients with directions to clinic and other areas of the building
  • Assists and directs staff’s visitors appropriately
  • Mans the phone and transfers calls to the appropriate service areas
  • Assist in receipt and pick-up of express packages when appropriate.
  • Assist and direct patients with tickets for check-in services


  • Completes and enters patient demographic, emergency contact and financial information accurately and efficiently in the computer system
  • Verifies demographics on each visit and makes the necessary changes to update the system
  • Maintains confidentiality when registering scheduled and walk-in patients
  • Notifies the charge nurse of all walk-ins in the primary clinic
  • Communicates to the medical record’s staff as needed by patient request
  • Requests two identifiers from patient prior to beginning the registration process
  • Verifies the identifiers presented by the client (if no picture ID, ask for supporting legal documents)
  • Assists in minimizing the spread of disease, requesting patients who are coughing to mask and notifying the charge nurse of their presence in the waiting area.
  • Activate Lab order
  • Check in patients for FibroScan clinic
  • May be required to assist the patient with scheduling appointments


  • Any and other duties as assigned
  • Maintains professional ethics and confidentiality


High School Degree required. Bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred. Two or more years experience in direct patient contact required.  Experience working in inpatient or outpatient ambulatory care required.  Basic computer literacy required.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette.  Completion of a customer service training class is a plus.
